NFL Football Regular Season Week 1 2017
Competition: NFL Football

Date:Thursday, September 7,2017
Location:Gillette Stadium, USA
Time: 8:30 ET PM

New England’s offense sputtered over the final six weeks of the season, only exceeding 30 points on one occasion — against the lowly Tennessee Titans. The Patriots are the only team in history in the merger era to finish the year 2-4 after starting 10-0.

Perhaps the biggest reason for the Patriots’ offensive woes has been Julian Edelman’s absence. Edelman, who broke his foot against the New York Giants Nov. 15, has developed into Brady’s go-to receiver over the last three years. The Patriots averaged 35 points per game while he was in the lineup this season, compared to 25 while he’s been sidelined. Their success rate on third down without Edelman has decreased by nearly 20 percent.

Patriots’ trade for LB Marquis Flowers shows club’s priority on special teams

Patriots’ trade for LB Marquis Flowers shows club’s priority on special teams

The New England Patriots acquisition of linebacker Marquis Flowers from the Cincinnati Bengals won’t move the needle much. But it sparks multiple thoughts that are important for the team.

Run of injuries on special teams. With linebackers Shea McClellin, Elandon Roberts and Harvey Langi, defensive end Geneo Grissom and safety Nate Ebner all having been sidelined in recent days/weeks with injuries, the Patriots have taken some significant hits, personnel-wise, in the kicking game. Specifically, giving up a seventh-round pick for Flowers makes me wonder about McClellin’s timetable for a return. Flowers should immediately step in as a member of the team’s core special-teams group. Also, special-teams captain Matthew Slater just returned to practice on Monday after nearly a four-week absence; he might need some time to get back up to speed.

Have you seen the Chiefs’ returners? With the Kansas City Chiefs coming to town on Sept. 7 for the NFL opener, the thought of slowing down punt returner Tyreek Hill and kickoff returner De’Anthony Thomas is probably costing Bill Belichick some hours of sleep. Each week, Belichick identifies the primary things the Patriots must do to win the game, and limiting big returns on special teams figures to be close to the top of the list. When reporters analyze a team’s roster, depth/quality on special-teams coverage and return units is often overlooked. But internally, the Patriots’ actions speak volumes of how they value special teams.

Shades of White trade in 2010. Prior to the 2010 season opener, the Patriots made a similar trade in acquiring veteran linebacker Tracy White and a seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a sixth-rounder. Just like the trade for Flowers, the deal for White didn’t generate much buzz, but White went on to play 42 games for the team over three seasons as a core special-teamer. That made the draft-pick compensation to acquire him a worthy investment. At the least, the Patriots will have Flowers on their team for 2017, as his contract expires after the season. If Flowers can improve the club’s special teams units, like White did, the trade will be a success for New England. They obviously value his skill set and didn’t want to risk losing him to another team on waivers (where they are last in the claiming order). In turn, the Bengals are wise to secure an asset for a player they probably were going to release anyway.

Giants vs. Patriots Football Point Spread: NFL Preseason Odds, Prediction

A rematch of the classic Super Bowl XLVI is on tap for this week as the New York Giants and New England Patriots meet up in the final week of preseason action. While their showdown in the championship game in 2012 was one of the NFL’s best games ever, don’t expect a similar level of intensity in this one. Both teams will be employing plenty of backups as they prepare for the start of the regular season.

New York Giants vs. New England Patriots Football

Point Spread: Patriots -3

Patriots Football Week 3 Preseason

Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Pats opened as 3-point favourites (-125) on the Sports Interaction NFL odds board.

Ben McAdoo and his Giants are 1-2 so far this preseason, which means that they are now 3-4 in his two preseasons overall. The good news is that the Giants won their only Week 4 game under McAdoo. They are now 0-4 in the first two weeks of the preseason under him but 3-0 in Weeks 3 and 4. As for the Patriots, they don’t fare so well in Week 4 under Bill Belichick. Overall, the Patriots are 40-33 in the preseason under Belichick but Week 4 is they only week they have a record below .500. They are 12-7 in Week 1, 10-8 in Week 2, 9-8 in Week 3 but are 7-10 in Week 4.

New York Giants

The Giants have looked really sluggish in preseason play. They barely edged out the New York Jets last week 32-31 but their point total was helped by some brutal Jets’ quarterbacking. Prior to that, they had scored a total of just 18 points in their first two preseason games.

Keep in mind that starting wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall are already banged up. Look for the Giants to be conservative in this one to protect their starters.

New England Patriots

The Patriots lost a key weapon last week when star wideout Julian Edelman tore his ACL. On one hand, it might lead you to believe that the Patriots will be extra cautious in Week 4. At the same time, they have a team that’s loaded with depth, so their backups could shine.

The Patriots have a very deep rotation at running back where guys like Dion Lewis, Mike Gillislee, James White, Rex Burkhead and Branden Bolden are all vying for playing time. Some of these guys – all of who have played significant snaps in regular season play – will see action. The same goes at quarterback for the Patriots. While we might not see much of Tom Brady, they have Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett – experienced quarterbacks – who will be running the show.

Patriots Football 2017: Draft Picks, NFL News Preview

Patriots Football 2017 Draft Picks, NFL News Preview. As the NFL Draft was getting underway in Philadelphia on April 27, a former Salem High School quarterback turned author and local sports agent was enjoying an event some 300 miles away that he expects to be the start of a wonderful tradition.

Three years ago, Sean Stellato published “No Backing Down,” a depiction of the 1994 Salem football team and the circumstances surrounding its unlikely run to the state finals. But on April 27, Stellato was joined by hundreds of New England Patriots fans and several members of the 2017 Super Bowl champion Patriots at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton.

While publicized as an NFL Draft Party, the evening had a deeper meaning to the man who spearheaded its organization.

“It’s a very gratifying feeling,” said Stellato, “to be able to bring the world champions into such a great resort for such a great cause. I pride myself on civic work, and this is a great kickoff to a very exciting start of the NFL season.

Patriots Football 2017

DE Derek Rivers, Youngstown St.

Round 3, Pick 19 (83) (from Titans)

Paul Perillo, Patriots Football Weekly

The 6-4, 248-pounder fills what many believed to be one of the team’s rare needs as a pass rusher, and his speed could be welcome addition on the edge if he develops.

Coming from an FCS school, Rivers is far from a finished product but he has a couple of factors working in his favor.  First, his coach with the Penguins was Bo Pelini, the former Nebraska boss who spent nine years in the NFL including three as linebackers coach with the Patriots from 1997-99 under Pete Carroll. Belichick has a good relationship with Pelini and that background surely helped in his evaluation, and having an experienced NFL coach certainly helped Rivers with his development. Rivers also performed well at the Senior Bowl, which allowed talent evaluators to assess his abilities against solid competition.

OT Antonio Garcia, Troy

Round 3, Pick 21 (85) (From Lions)

Paul Perillo, Patriots Football Weekly

Garcia is considered to be quite gifted physically but a bit raw, which is fine for New England since Belichick likely doesn’t plan to have him on the field in 2017.”

But starting left tackle Nate Solder is entering the final year of his contract and the Patriots could be in the market for a replacement. Belichick has selected the heir apparent at that position a year early in the past. In fact, he did so in 2011 with Solder himself, who was taken 17th overall a year before mainstay Matt Light retired.

DE Deatrich Wise, Arkansas

Round 4, Pick 25 (131) (From Seattle)

MARK DULGERIAN, NFL.COM

Bill Belichick loves versatility on his defense and Wise brings that to the defensive line. He has some upside as a low end starter and should find his way into the rotation early in his career.

OT Conor McDermott, UCLA

Round 6, Pick 28 (211) (From Cowboys)

MARK DULGERIAN, NFL.COM

Legendary Patriots’ offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia is the type of coach that develops late-round guys with McDermott’s natural mobility and turns them into contributors, if not starters down the line.
